Civil liberties are freedoms and rights given to society and the legal barriers are the laws that prevent certain freedoms.

An organisation that campaign to end human rights abuses through writing letters to heads of state etc. They will campaign to get people out of prison in countries where they are not from for crimes that aren’t illegal in their country.

How does due process link to civil liberties?

Answer 5

They ensure that there is fairness and equality for everyone. Someone can’t be arrested without good reason following the idea of innocent until proven guilty. There is also the freedom about being detained without trial. This ensures that someone isn’t arrested and thrown in prison without the presence of a lawyer and a fair trial.

Why might civil liberties become a limitation when achieving social control?

• freedom of speech: people can say whatever they want, causing problems and being rude to other people which may lead to more criminal offences, when does it move from being a freedom to a crime.
• Freedom to assemble: there needs to be guidelines that state when something is no longer a peaceful protest, just stop oil have caused so many problems, they have a right to protest but not to lie down in a main road, block roads or throw soup on the Mona Lisa etc.
