3.2.5 Transition metals Flashcards
Transition metal
A d-block element that forms at least one stable ion with an incomplete d sub-shell.
Ligand
A molecule or anion which donated a lone pair of electrons to a metal ion to form a coordinate bond.
Complex
A central metal atom or ion bonded to one or more ligands by coordinate bonds.
Coordination number
The number of coordinate bonds to the central metal atom or ion.
Bidentate ligand
A ligand that has two atoms with a lone pair which can each form coordinate bonds with the metal ion.
Multidentate ligand
A ligand that can form two or more coordinate bonds to a transition metal ion from different atoms on the same ligand.
Stereoisomers
Stereoisomers are species with the same structural formula but with a different arrangement of atoms in space.
Optical isomers
Non-superimposable mirror images.
Ligand substitution
A reaction in which one ligand coordinately bonded to a central metal atom or ion is replaced by another.
Chelate effect
The substitution of monodentate ligands by a bi- or multidentate ligand to form a more stable complex.
