49
Q

Which period 3 element has the highest melting point?

A

Si/Silicon

50
Q

Explain why magnesium oxide has a higher melting point than sodium oxide

A

Both compounds are giant ionic lattices. MgO contains 2+ ions, Na2O contaisn Na+ ions (both contain O2- ions). Mg2+ ions have a higehr charge than Na+, and also have a smaller ionic radius, so the attraction between Mg2+ ions and O2- ions is stronger than attraction between Na+ ions and O2- ions, so require more energy to overcome

51
Q

Explain why P4O10 has a higher melting point than SO3

A

Both are simple molecular lattices, with induced dipole-dipole forces between molecules. These are stonger in P4O10, since these molecules have more electrons than SO2, so more energy is required to overcome the intermolecular forces
