How did the governance of terror arise?
After the execution of Luis XVI, The Government of Terror came into being because of the need to organize the Republic against internal and external threats to survive.
Define the Committee of public safety
A de facto executive cabinet tasked with Protecting the government from internal and external enemies.
Define Committee of general security
Had overall responsibility for police security, surveillance and, spying.
What was the revolutionary tribunal?
A court specialising in trying those accused of counter-revolutionary activities.
Define Representatives-on-Mission
Mostly Jacobin sent to reassert Government authority.
What was the “Comites de Surveillance”?
Surveillance (watch committees). Sometimes known as revolutionary committees.
What was the Summary Execution Decree?
It was a decree that meant that any rebels captured with arms were to be executed immediately.
How were the Girondins overthrown?
When they began rising against the Jacobins the news spread through France, angering the people. Around 30,000 national guardsmen surrounded the convention and demanded the expulsions of the Girondins. To avoid massacre or seizure the assembly was forced to comply.
What was the federalist revolt?
Federalism is the rejection of central authority in favour of regional authority. Basically, the regional cities began to resent the power of Paris and the Jacobins.
