3.2.2.1 The structure of eukaryotic cells Flashcards
What are the main eukaryotic cells?
Animal, Plant, Algal and Fungal
What are the two types of cells?
Eukaryotic Cells and Prokaryotic Cells
What are the 10 different organelles in a cell?
- Cell surface membrane
- Nucleus
- Mitochondria
- Chloroplasts
- Golgi Apparatus
- Lysosome
- Ribosomes
- Rough endoplasmic recticulum
- Smooth endoplamic recticulum
- Cell Wall
What is the Cell Surface Membrane?
Description and Function
- Surface that surrounds an animal cell and made of mainly lipids/proteins
- Regulates what goes into and out of the cell
What is the Nucleus?
Description and Function
- Controls the cells activities by controlling the transcription of DNA
- DNA contains the insturctions to make proteins
What are the sub-organelles in the nucleus?
Name and Function
Nuclear Envelope
- Double membrane which holds everything together
Nucleolus
- Site of ribosome production
Chromatins
- Linear DNA tightly wound around hostones proteins
Nuclear Pores
- Channels that allow for mRNA and Ribosomes to travel out of the nucleus
What is the mitochondria?
Description and Function
- Double Membrane
- The site of aerobic respiration which produces ATP
- Oval shaped and can be found in large numbers
What are the sub-organelles in mitochondria?
Name and Function
Cristae
- Structures formed due to the folding of the inner membrane
Matrix
- Cytoplasm of the mitochondria but containstains enzymes
