3.2.1 Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil Flashcards
1
Q
Notes about fractional Distillation
A
- Mainly alkanes
- Fractionating column
- hot at bottom, cool at top
- Crude oil enters fractionating column and heated, vapours rise
- Vapours of hydrocarbons with high boiling points immediately condense to liquid at high temps lower down column and are tapped off as liquids
- Vapours with lower BP rise and condense at top to be tapped off
- Different fractions condense according to different boiling points
- Bigger hydrocarbons collected at lower sections, smaller at top
