3.2.1 Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil Flashcards

1
Q

Notes about fractional Distillation

A
  • Mainly alkanes
  • Fractionating column
  • hot at bottom, cool at top
  • Crude oil enters fractionating column and heated, vapours rise
  • Vapours of hydrocarbons with high boiling points immediately condense to liquid at high temps lower down column and are tapped off as liquids
  • Vapours with lower BP rise and condense at top to be tapped off
  • Different fractions condense according to different boiling points
  • Bigger hydrocarbons collected at lower sections, smaller at top
