3.2 The Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
Cerebral Cortex (Cerebrum)
Receives sensory information from surroundings.
Cerebral cortex is the centre for conscious thought. It also recalls memories and alters behaviour in the light of experience.
Localisation of Function
Localisation of brain functions describes the fact that different areas of the brain carry out different tasks eg sensory, motor and association areas.
Sensory Area
Receives information (impulses) from
receptors via sensory neurons.
Motor Area
Sends impulses to effectors via motor
neurons.
Association Area
Analyses & interprets impulses received from sensory areas. Is involved in language processing, personality, imagination and intelligence.
Corpus Callosum
Information is passed from one side of the brain to the other through a bundle of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum.
Left v Right Side
Each side of the brain controls the other side of the body so the LEFT hemisphere
processes information from the RIGHT visual field and controls the RIGHT side of the body. The reverse is true of the RIGHT hemisphere.
