3.2- the cerebral cortex Flashcards
what is the cerebral cortex?
the outer later of the cerebrum which forms the largest and most complex part of the brain
what is the cerebral cortex the centre of?
conscious thought
2 functions of the cerebral cortex
recalls memories
alters behaviour in light of past experiences
what is the cerebral cortex split by and what are they called?
split by a deep cleft into two halves called the cerebral hemispheres
2 functions of the left hemisphere
processes information from the right visual field
controls the right side of the body
2 functions of the right hemisphere
processes information from the left visual field
controls the right left of the body
how are the hemispheres connected and what are they called?
large bundle of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum
why is this fibrous link important?
allows information to be transferred from one hemisphere to the other
3 types of functional area in the cerebral cortex
sensory
association
motor
4 things association areas are involved in
language processing
personality
imagination
intelligence
what do sensory areas receive and send?
receive information as sensory impulses from body’s receptors
send these to the association areas
what do association areas receive and send?
receive information from sensory areas
analyses and interprets impulses
sends these to the motor areas
what do motor areas receive and send?
receive information from association areas
sends motor impulses to appropriate effector
