What did Mao do to impose his own form of education?
He decided to rid the country of potentially independent-minded professionals and send them to the countryside to be ‘re-educated’.
What schools were closed?
Traditional schools and colleges.
What schools were opened?
Those which promised to promote Mao’s idea of communism.
What was the result of this new education?
An entire generation has been left illiterate to a large extent.
What was the purpose of the ‘Down to the Countryside movement’?
To ‘re-educate’.
Who else was ‘re-educated’?
Young and privileged individuals.
What was ‘re-education’?
Hard labour.
What was the result?
China’s economy slowed to a halt. It failed to bring about Mao’s desired transformation.
Why did it fail?
Displacement of people caused heavy industries to collapse once again as China’s main focus had become ‘Revolution’. There was no support from other countries as China was in international isolation between 1966-1968.
