3.2-3.9 properties of waves Flashcards
whats the difference between longditudinal and transverse waves
perpendicular:
direction of the wave is perpendicular to the oscillation
parallel:
direction of the wave is parallel to the oscillation
how do you calculate wave speed?
wave speed= frequency x wavelength
how do you calculate frequency?
frequency= 1/time period
describe the doppler effect
in the way an object is moving the wavefronts bunch up and behind they spread out
if an object is moving towards a stationary observer these bunched up waves are percieved at a higher frequency and opposite
define the doppler effect
the apparent change in the frequency of a wave caused by relative motion between the source of the wave and the observer
define refraction
when light passes a boundary between two different transparent media
define reflection
when a wave hits boundary between two media where the wave speeds differ, but the wave stays in the original medium instead of passing into the second medium
