3.1.8 Inorganic ions Flashcards
What are the four inorganic ions in the body?
Iron(Fe^2+) Phosphate (PO4^3-) Hydrogen (H+) Sodium (Na+)
What is Iron’s role in the body?
Found in haemoglobin and plays a role in oxygen transport
What is Phosphate’s role in the body?
Forms structural role in DNA and storage energy in ATP
What is Hydrogen’s role in the body?
To determine the pH of solutions (H+ ions interact with H-bond and ionic bonds in tertiary structure of proteins which can cause them to denature)
What is Sodium’s role in the body?
Important in transport of glucose/amino acids across plasma membranes
Acid- proton donor or acceptor?
Proton donor
Base- proton donor or acceptor?
Proton acceptor
What are inorganic ions and where are they found in the body?
Ions that do not contain carbon atoms. ● Found in cytoplasm & extracellular fluid. ● May be in high or very low concentrations.
What is the formula for pH?
-log^10(H+ conc)
Calculate the pH for a solution containing 0.1 moldm^-3 HCL
-log(0.1)=1
Calculate the pH of a solution containing 0.005 moldm^-3 H^2SO4
0.005=1 mol
H^2= 0.005 x 2= 0.01
-log(0.01)=2
