3.1.6 Chemical equilibria, Le Chatelier's principle and Kc Flashcards
When is a dynamic equilibrium reached ?
When the rate of forward reaction equals the rate of backwards reaction
What conditions are needed for dynamic equilibrium to be reached ?
Must be in a closed system so no products are lost to surroundings
What is le chateliers principle ?
If a reaction at equilibrium is subject to change in pressure, temp or concentration, the position of equilibrium will move to counteract the change
What happens to reactants if equilibria shifts to the left ?
More reactants are made
What happens to products if equilibria shifts to the right ?
More products are made
If pressure is increased, where will equilibria shift to ?
To the side with the least gas particles
If pressure is decreased, where will equilibria shift to ?
To the side with the most gas particles
What happens to position of equilibria if we increase the temperature ?
It will shift in the endothermic direction to reduce the temperature
What happens to position of equilibria if we decrease the temperature ?
It will shift in the exothermic direction to increase the temperature
Is the forward reaction exothermic or endothermic ?
Exothermic, means Delta (Triangle) H will be negative
What effect do catalysts have on position of equilibrium ?
They have no effect on position of eqiuilbria, they speed up the forward and backwards reaction equally
Do catalysts have an effect on yield ?
They will speed up the rate at which equilibria is reached but have no effect on yield
What effect does pressure have on rate ?
High pressure increases rate
What is the problem with high pressure environments ?
They are very expensive
