3.1.5 Stereoisomerism Flashcards
1
Q
What is stereoisomerism?
A
Compounds with the same atoms connected to each other just arranged differently in space
2
Q
What are the 2 types of stereoisomerism?
A
- Geometric isomerism (E/Z)
- Optical Isomerism
3
Q
What is E/Z isomerism?
A
Seen in unsaturated or ring compounds with same molecular formula but differently arranged in space
Compounds have different chemical and physical properties
4
Q
What does E and Z mean
A
E isomers have functional groups on opposite side of double bond / carbon ring (trans)
Z isomers have functional groups on the same side of double bond / carbon ring (cis)
