3.1.2 Flashcards
What is the relative atomic mass of an element (Ar)?
the average mass of one atom of an element compared with one twelfth of the mass of one atom of carbon 12
What is the molecular formula?
a formula showing the numbers and types of atoms present in a molecule
What is the relative molecular mass (Mr)?
the mass of one molecule of an element or compound compared with one twelfth the mass of one atom of carbon-12
What is Avogadro’s constant?
One mole of a substance contains 6.022×10^23 particles
What is the equation for Avogadro’s constant?
Mass/Mr = amount in moles = number of particles/ Avogadro’s constant
What is ether equation for Avogadro’s constant in symbols?
m/Mr = n = number of particles/L
What is the law of conservation of mass?
In all chemical reactions the total mass of reactants used is equal to the total mass of the products made
What is meant by stoichiometry?
The formal word for a balanced equation, it is the proportion in which elements or compounds react with one another, it’s the ratio of moles of reactants and products in a balanced equation
What’s the equation used to work out the percentage yield?
% yield = actual yield/theoretical yield
What factors affect the % yield?
Loss by mechanical transfer, losses during separation, side reactions occurring, incomplete reactions
Sometimes it can be more than one hundred percent of the product isn’t dried properly/fully
What is a limiting reagent?
The reactant that limits the reaction/ the reactant not in excess
What is atom economy?
The nature of the protein is the products of a reaction are desired products and how much are waste, the higher the economy the less waste is produced.
What is the equation for atom economy?
% atom economy = mass of desired product/ total mass of products as shown in the equation * 100
