3.1.1.6 Energy systems Flashcards
What are the 3 energy systems ?
Aerobic system, Anaerobic glycotic system, ATP-PC system
What are the three stages of the aerobic system ?
- Glycolysis
- Kreb cycle
- Electron transport chain
What is happens during glycolysis?
Glucose is converted into pyruvic acid
Pyruvic acid is then oxidised into acetyl coenzyme A
What happens during the krebs cycle?
Acetyl coenzyme A enters the kreb cycle
This takes place in the mitochondria
Citric acid is then produced which releases hydrogen ions
What happens during the electron transport chain?
Hydrogen ions enter the electron transport chain, which produces high amounts of energy(32-34 ATP)
Explain the ATP-PC energy system.
ATP only lasts for 2-3 seconds
Phosphocreatine is broken down to resynthesise ATP
Once broken down it will provide energy for 8-10 seconds
What is ATP
ATP is (A) Adenosine (TP) Triphosphate
ATP consists of 1 molecule of adenosine and 3 phosphate
ATP is the energy we use for muscular contractions
The energy is released by breaking the molecule bonds.
Explain the anaerobic glycotic system
Glucose is broken down into 2ATP and pyruvic acid
As this system is anaerobic there is no oxygen
pyruvic acid without the presence of oxygen converts to lactic acid
Lactic acid then causes pain and fatigue
