a sanction is penalty imposed by courts on a person who is guilty of a criminal offence

define deterrence
is a process by which the court can discourage the offender and others in the community from committing a similar offence.
define general deterrence
aimed at deterring the entire community from committing similar offences.
-dependent on people knowing the sentence that is imposed
- people should understand sentence being imposed.
define specific deterrence
aimed to discourage the offender from committing the same offence.
-significant if there a reoffender
define denunciation
Denunciation is a purpose of sanctions whereby the court publicly condemns or criticises the offender’s criminal behaviour.
define rehabilitation
designed to address the underlying cause of offending, and treat the offender based on those causes.
define punishment
a strategy designed to penalise the offender and show society and the victims that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated.
define protection
designed to ensure that the community is safe from any further harm that can be caused by the offender.
