3.1.1.1 Fundamental Particles Flashcards

Q

What is the History of the atom?

A

1661 - Robert Boyle - There are substances that cannot be made smaller than chemical elements
1803 - John Dalton - Elements were made of invisible atoms. Each atom has a specific mass/shape depending on the element
1896 - Henri Becequerell - Discovered radioactivity and therefore atoms weren’t invisible
1897 - JJ Thompson - discovered the electron and suggested that electrons where located within the atom as they are light (Plum Pudding Model)
1911 - Ernest Rutherford - discovered the positive charge in a tiny nucleus due to gold foil experiment
1932 - James Chadwick - neutrons in the nucleus
