3.1.1 e tidal volume vital capacity, breathing rate and oxygen uptake Flashcards
breathing rate
number of breaths taken per minute
what is a peak flow meter?
measures the rate at which air can be expelled from the lungs
what is a vitalograph?
patient breathes out as quickly as they can through a mouth piece and the instrument produces a graph of the amount of air breathed out and how quickly it is breathed out.
volume of air called the forced expiratory volume in one second.
what is a spirometer?
used to measure different aspects of lung volume or to investigate breathing patterns
what is tidal volume?
volume of air that moves into and out of your lungs with each resting breath
what is vital capacity?
maximum volume of air that is breathed in after the strongest possible exhalation which is followed by the deepest possible intake of breath
what is residual volume?
volume of air left in your lungs after the strongest possible exhalation, cannot be measured directly
what is the inspiratory reserve volume?
maximum volume of air you can breathe in over and above a normal inhalation
what is expiratory reserve volume?
extra amount of air you can force out of your lungs over and above the normal tidal volume of air you breathe out
what is your total lung capacity?
sum of vital capacity and residual volume
what is the ventilation rate?
total volume of air inhaled in one minute
how do you work out ventilation rate?
tidal volume x breathing rate (per minute)
