Key Term: What is a place?
A place is a space to which people have an attachment. It can be summarised as location or description. Location is the physical location where it can be plotted on a map or described using coordinates . Description is the social construction, so what the place means to a person, including both human and physical characteristics.

This is the emotional meanings a person has to a place, it is subjective meaning it is ‘personal’ to that individual
Key term: locale
A place which is shaped by the people, cultures and customs within it
Why is place important?
It is importance of place to people because it’s often where people feel connections or it relates to an aspect of their lives; connections help form an identity, which is important as it helps you to have a sense of belonging
What are the characteristics that contribute to place identity at a local scale? 
Physical geography, demography, socio-economic factors, cultural factors, political factors, built environment 
Place identity: what is meant by a physical geography?
 E.g. altitude, slope, angle, aspect, drainage, geology 
Place identity: what is meant by demography?
E.g. number of inhabitants, their ages, gender, and ethnicity 
Place identity: what is meant by socio-economic?
E.g. employment types, income and family status, education 
Place identity: what is meant by cultural factors? 
E.g. religion, local traditions, local clubs, and societies 
Play identity: what is meant by political factors?
 E.g. local, regional and national government, local groups such as resident associations

E.g. age, and style of buildings, including building materials, density of housing
