3.1 - molecule polarity Flashcards

1
Q

what is the vsepr theory?

A

the valence shell electron pair repulsion theory is a scientific theory that suggests that atoms with a molecule are arranged at the farthest possible distance apart in order to minimise repulsion between the atoms.

the theory also assists in predicted the three-dimensional shapes of molecules.

Q

what are the different sorts of molecule shapes?

A

tetrahedral: 4 electron domains
trigonal pyramid: 3 electron domains
linear: 2 electron domains
trigonal planar: 4 electron domains with one pair of lone electrons.
bent or v-shape: 4 electron domains with two pairs of lone electrons.

Q

what are polar molecules?

A

polar molecules arise when there is a difference in electronegativity between the bonding atoms.

Q

what are non polar molecules?

A

non polar molecules are formed when there is either no electronegativity difference between the atoms of the molecule is perfectly symmetrical.

Q

what contributes to molecule polarity?

A

the polarity of a molecule results from the polar character of the bonds and their spatial arrangement.

Q

describe the trend of electronegativity on the periodic table.

A

electronegativity increases from left to right across a period and from bottom to top in a group. Fluorine is the most electronegative element.
