3.1 Formulae and Chemical Equasions Flashcards
Non-metals and hydrogen form __ and their names __.
Anions and their names end in -ide.
Metals form __ and their names __.
Cations and their names are the same as the element.
Naming an ionic compound:
(Metal) (Non-metal) (-ide suffix)
Naming a non-metal compound:
(Hydrogen if present) (Element with lowest group number) (Other element) (-ide suffix)
Molecular compound formulas show __.
The type and number of each atom in one molecule.
Ionic compound formulas show __.
The type and ratio of ions in the compound.
What is valency?
A measure of how many bonds an atom can form - the ammount of electrons that an atom can gain, lose or share to form a compound.
What is the valency of the electrons in the groups of the periodic table?
I - 1
II - 2
III - 3
IV - 4
V - 3
VI - 2
VII - 1
VIII - 0
Finding formulas using valency:
The amount of atoms needed is the other elements valency.
Name the diatomic elements:
- Hydrogen (H2)
- Nitrogen (N2)
- Flourine (F2)
- Oxygen (O2)
- Iodine (I2)
- Chlorine (Cl2)
- Bromine (Br2)
