3.1 Extracting Metals Flashcards
How do we get an ore?
We mine ores
What can we do with the unreactive metals found in the ground?
Use them straight away as they are ready to go
What is a reduction reaction?
Where the oxygen in a metal oxide is given away
What is an oxidation reaction?
Where the given oxygen from a metal oxide is taken up by another, less reactive substance, like an oxygen displacement reaction
What may an ore need to have happened before the metal is extracted?
May need to be concentrated
Name 2 disadvantages of metal extraction
- large amounts of waste
* major impacts on the environment
How can metals be extracted from their ores (metal oxide)?
Using a more reactive elements to displace the metal with the oxygen
How can we extract metals that are less reactive than carbon? What type of reaction is this?
Heating the metals with carbon, the carbon will bond with the oxygen to make co2, leaving the metal
This is a reduction reaction
What method do we use commercially if possible to remove metals less reactive than carbon?
Reduction
Name 2 metals that have oxides that can be reduced by carbon
- iron
- tin
- lead
- zinc
- copper
What do we call the removal of oxygen from a metal oxide?
Reduction
What is an ore?
A rock that contains enough of a metal or its compound to make it worth extracting that metal
What do we use to produce heat for a large scale reduction reaction?
A blast furnace
