3.1 - Cabling Flashcards
Describe a Category 5 Ethernet cable
Ethernet - twisted pair. 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T at 100 meters.
What does 10BASE-T mean?
Sends data at 10 megabytes per second. T means twisted pair.
Describe a Category 5e Ethernet cable
Enhanced ethernet - twisted pair. 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T at 100 meters.
What does TX mean in a cable name
It refers to a form of Fast Ethernet
Describe a Category 6 Ethernet cable
Ethernet - twisted pair. 10GBASE-T at 100 meters.
What is plenum?
Fire rated cable for drop ceilings - Made of Low smoke PVC or FEP - Less flexible than non-plenum
What is shielded twisted pair?
Cable in which either individual twisted pairs or all pairs together or shielded with foil or braided screen. Requires a grounding wire.
What does STP stand for?
Shielded twisted pair
What does UTP stand for?
Unshielded twisted pair
568A and 568B
Refer to pin assignments for RJ45 cabling. The orange and green pairs (2 and 3) are interchanged. B is more common.
Describe a fiber cable
Uses light to transmit data over long distances. Multimode or single mode.
What is single mode fiber used for?
Long range communication
What is multimode fiber used for?
Short range communication
Describe a coaxial cable
Comes in RG-6 and RG-59 varieties. Ends in RF connector.
What is RG-6 coax used for?
television/digital cable/internet.
What is RG-59 coax used for?
Patch cables - short distance only
Describe a VGA cable
Video cable - DB-15 connector, Sends analog signal short distances
Describe an HDMI cable
Sends both video and audio - Only digital signal - 19 pin connector
Describe a mini HDMI cable
Video - Type C connector - for smaller devices
Describe a DisplayPort cable
Video cable - sends packets of data - compatible with HDMI and DVI via adapters
Describe a DVI cable
Video cable - single or dual link - DVI-D, I, or A
What types of data do the different types of DVI cables send?
DVI-D sends digital, DVI-A sends analog, DVI-I sends both
