3.1 Atomic structure and the periodic table Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas
What are the subatomic particles?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
What is an element?
Made up of the same atom ONLY
What are all substances made of?
Atoms
Why are the chemical properties of isotopes of an element the same?
They have the same number of electrons in the outer shell
What are the masses on the subatomic particles in an atom?
Protons = 1 Electrons = 1/1800 Neutrons = 1
What’s a period?
The row in the periodic table.
What’s a group?
column of periodic table
What’s a shell?
circles around the atom that show where electrons can be found.
What is the relationship between shells and periods?
number of shells = period
How many electrons can the first shell hold?
2
How many electrons can the second and third shell hold?
Up to 8
What happens to the reactivity of group 1 metals as you go down the group?
Reactivity increases
What happens to the reactivity of group 7 elements as you go down the group?
Reactivity decreases
What are the particles like in a solid?
packed closely together, fixed positions, vibrate, low energy
