3.1 Flashcards
What is a relation?
In a relation each value/element in set A (the domain) corresponds to ONE OR MORE values/elements in set B (the range).
What is a function?
A function is a relation in which each element of set A corresponds to EXACTLY ONE element of set B.
When given a set of ordered pairs what is a function?
A function is a set of ordered pairs in which no first coordinate is repeated.
What makes up the domain?
Set A, or the x values of a set of ordered pairs.
What makes up the range?
Set B, or the y values of a set of ordered pairs.
When given a graph of plotted points how do you determine the domain?
The domain is each x value listed separately but not repeated.
When given a graph of plotted points how do you determine the range?
The range is each y value that is plotted but not repeated.
When given a graph of plotted points how do you determine if it is a function?
It is a function if each x value only has one y value.
How do you determine if an equation is a function?
If you only can get one y value for each corresponding x value then it is a function.
When an equation solved for y has an odd nth root how many y values are there in the range for each corresponding x value in the domain? Does this mean y is a function of x or not?
For odd nth roots the equation will have only one y value for each x value, therefore the equation is a function.
For equations solved for y that have even nth roots how many y values are there for each x value and is the equation a function?
When given an even nth root there are multiple values of y for each x value and therefore y is not expressed as a function of x.
