Q

When are blood tests indicated for patients?

A

Patients on blood thinners should have INR test
prior to surgery to avoid excessive bleeding.
Acceptable INR < 3

  • White blood cell count – for patients with
HIV, it is important to know the WBC count prior
to surgery. CD4+ cells should be >500 cells/mm3.
Normal value for HIV patient is 500-1500
    cells/mm3. If CD4+ < 1500, avoid surgery.
If CD4+ is < 200, it is AIDS
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Total Bilirubin
tests indicate liver function which may indicate
increased bleeding risk or contraindication of
    certain drugs (e.g. acetaminophen)
