Q
When are blood tests indicated for patients?
A
Patients on blood thinners should have INR test
prior to surgery to avoid excessive bleeding.
Acceptable INR < 3
- White blood cell count – for patients with
HIV, it is important to know the WBC count prior
to surgery. CD4+ cells should be >500 cells/mm3.
Normal value for HIV patient is 500-1500
cells/mm3. If CD4+ < 1500, avoid surgery.
If CD4+ is < 200, it is AIDS - Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Total Bilirubin
tests indicate liver function which may indicate
increased bleeding risk or contraindication of
certain drugs (e.g. acetaminophen)

Q
What are the normal salivary flow rate?
A
Normal Salivary Flow:
Stimulated = 1.5-2.0 mL/min
Unstimulated = 0.3-0.4 mL/min
Hyposalivation:
Stimulated ≤ 0.5–0.7 mL/min
Unstimulated ≤0.1 mL/min
