Who oversees fitness evals?

A

The District’s Health Fitness Coordinator, (HFC) working under the direction of the District’s Physician, will oversee all components of the fitness evaluation. The HFC will also calculate all of the results of the Fitness Evaluations and give the report to the District’s Physician.

How many Fitness tiers does the district have and what do they mean:

A

Tier 1 – Minimum acceptable level of health/fitness. Employee is encouraged to maintain/improve health/fitness at this level.
Tier 2 – Employee does not meet two or more of the shaded values indicated in Tier 2, but does not meet a level that necessitates removal from assignment. Employee will be placed on 90 day health/fitness improvement program as described in Appendix 1.
The following medical conditions require referral to personal physician:
• VO2 Max = 30 or less
• Systolic BP = 140-159 w/ Diastolic BP of 91-99
• Fasting blood sugar = 150-249
Tier 3 – At the discretion of the District’s Physician, any shaded Tier 3 health parameter not met may be sufficient for removal from field operations and may result in any or all of the following actions:
• Referral to personal physician
• Placed on a health/fitness program by the District Physician and/or referral to a District Peer Fitness Trainer
• Retested on the parameters not met as directed by the District Physician
• Retested periodically at the District Physician’s discretion thereafter until the Parameter is met.

Fitness responsibility:

A

Health Fitness Coordinator (HFC) Responsibility: Within 30 days of the completion of the fitness
testing process, the HFC will notify each employee’s supervisor of their fitness tier classification.
Improvement programs, if necessary, will be initiated with the supervisor at that time.

Employee Responsibility:
Each employee is responsible for maintaining their health and fitness so they operate at their
optimal fitness level and meet their job task requirements. It is the goal of the District to have
Operations Division members reach and maintain Tier 1 level Health and Fitness.

Supervisor Responsibility: Each supervisor is responsible for helping ensure their employees
have the best opportunity to maintain a Tier 1 fitness classification. This includes supporting the
supervision and management process of a fitness improvement program should one of their employees score in a Tier 2 or 3 fitness classification

A

PT must be a non-contact activity performed in a safe manner. Individuals as well as company
officers share this responsibility.
Always warm up with light cardio and dynamic stretching
Standard NWFD PT uniforms must be worn during all PT activities.
Company officers are responsible for ensuring that aggressiveness and competitiveness are managed appropriately.

Fitness facility rules

A

Use only off site public facilities with good lighting, non slippery surfaces. Jogging or playing surfaces should also be inspected for other hazards such as large stones and rodent holes.
Never utilize a public facility if people are waiting to use it.
Maintain a low profile at public facilities by: parking inconspicuously, keeping radio volumes down, and being courteous, quiet and professional.
The apparatus must be parked close to the activity.
Participation must never compromise response.
Only one station at a PT site at a time. The company officers shall coordinate any necessary coverage issues with their shift commander.

In general, NWFD facilities are the only authorized locations for physical fitness activities. The only
exception to this policy is that uniformed personnel are allowed to walk/jog and participate in non contact
sports at a public park or school near their assigned station. No on-duty workouts are to be done at public or private health facilities.

If the operation of the vehicle is impaired, place the vehicle out of service, and request a mechanic
to determine if the vehicle may be moved safely, and what repairs will be needed prior to placing it
back in service.
