Penedes - from med coast up into hills creates different climates. Mostly cava plantings Priorat DoQ - One of only 2 ACs in Spain. Top quality red wines, old vine Garnacha
Best soil type in Priorat
Llicorella (layers of red slate and particles which sparkle) help ripening by reflecting and conserving heat. Also retain water through growing season
Albarino characteristics. Where grown in Spain
Grown in NW. Aromatic variety.
Thick skinned = resists fungal disease (grown in damp climate).
Naturally high acidity. Refreshing stone fruit, citrus. Or can use less / oak and make in fully bodied style.
Verdejo typical style
Similar to Sauv Blanc. Fresh, floral and aromatic. Light bodied, high acid, melon and peach. Or richer style if skin contact/barrel ferment.
Need to use protective winemaking as susceptible to oxidation.
NW Spain climate influences and what is it known for
Cooler and wetter relative to rest of Spain due to Atlantic. Therefore home to many of best Spanish whites. Most celebrated is Albarino from Rias Baixas DO
Common problem in Rias Baixas and solution
Means “lower river”
Damp / humid = mildew and rot
Vines trained on pergolas (or other trellising) to encourage air circulation
Different styles between La Mancha and Valdepenas
Same climates, but Valdepenas has a reputation for quality (red + white)
Airen + Tempranillo (Cencibel) main grapes.
Types of wine typical from La Mancha and why
Vast central area of dry/baron land - volume wine region
Most widely planted is Airen (neutral fresh white wines) but plantings declining
Source of inexpensive well-made reds and whites for export.
