[30] Ankle Injuries Flashcards
What are the types of ankle injuries?
Ligament strain
Ankle fracture
How is an ankle ligament strain typically obtained?
A twisting inversion injury
What does a twisting inversion injury of the ankle cause?
Strains anterior talofibular part of the lateral collateral ligament
Are medial deltoid ligament strains common?
No they are rare
What might ankle ligament strains be associated with?
Malleolar avulsion fractures
What are the Ottowa ankle rules?
You should x-ray the ankle if there is pain in the malleolar zone, and any of;
- Tenderness along the distal 6cm of the posterior tib/fib, including posterior tip of the malleoli
- Inability to bear weight both immediately and in A&E
What does the Weber classification despite?
The relation of the fibula fracture to the joint line
What is a Weber A fracture?
Below joint line
What is a Weber B fracture?
At joint line
What is a Weber C fracture?
Above joint line
What do Weber B and C fractures possibly represent?
Possible injury to the syndesmotic ligaments between the tib and fib, leading to instability
How are Weber A fractures managed?
Boot, or below knee plaster
How are non-displaced Weber B/C fractures managed?
Below-knee plaster
How are displaced Weber B/C fractures managed?
Closed reduction and plaster if anatomical reduction achieved, ORIF if closed reduction fails
