3. Visual Perception Flashcards
What is brightness adaptation?
Changing sensitivity to brightness to protect photoreceptors from damage
How does pupil size adapt?
Constricts in bright light to protect the eye, and dilates in darkness to let in more light
How does the use of rods and cones adapt?
Rods are used in darkness, cones in light
What is photopigment bleaching?
Chemicals in rods and cones stop working in high or low intensity light levels, therefore becoming inactive and are protected from light damage.
What is brightness adaptation level?
The current sensitivity level of the visual system for a given set of conditions.
What is an important consideration when displaying images?
The eye’s ability to discriminate intensities at a given adaptation level
