3 types of rocks Flashcards
Igneous
Forms when molten rock cools
what types of igneous rocks are there
Extrusive and Intrusive
what is extrusive
is when lava cools above the surface and cools quickly and forms small crystals
what is intrusive
is when magma cools below the surface and cools slowy to form large crystals
Metamorphic
is when a igneous or sedimentary rock experience high pressure or extreme heat, it takes million of years to form a metamorphic rock
what are the type of metamorphic rock
contact and regional
contact
occurs when hot magma comes in contact with rocks, the extreme heat causes it to transform into a new rock
regional
occurs when rocks are burried under layers of sediments and exposed to extreme heat and a new rock is transformed due to the pressure of tectonic plates
sedimentary
are formed when sediments are eroded or weathered
what are the three types of sedimentary rock
chemical, organic and weathered
what is the five steps of formation in sedimentary rock
weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction, cementation
