3 Trigeminal System Flashcards
If there is a lesion in the medulla on the right between the spinal cord and the level of the principal trigeminal nucleus
the fine touch to the left side of the face will be _____________. What if the lesion is at the level of the midbrain?
Sensory spared, pain and temp lost ipsilaterally
All lost
Describe the anterior trigeminothalamic tract.
It projects to the contralateral cortex. It contains second order neurons and crosses the midline. Neurons communicate with 3rd order neurons in contralateral thalamus
What nucleus of the thalamus does the anterior trigeminothalamic tract project to?
Principal sensory nucleus! Located n the pons (carries fine touch (two point) sensation, position, vibration.
Descending into spinal tract of trigeminal.. terminate in spinal trigeminal nucleus (PAIN AND TEMP)
What kind of sensation is lost if there is a damage in the spinal trigeminal nucleus?
Pain and temperature sensation is lost
What kind of sensation is lost if there is a damage in the principal trigeminal nucleus?
Fine touch (two point) sensation
Position
Vibration
Is it possible for a person to lose sensation in the upper lip and not in the lower lip?
Nope. Would Be all V2
How many spots would you check on your diabetic patient to ensure there is no sensory loss in their face? Where?
…
What nerves conduct the pain from the meninges?
Fibers of trigeminal ganglion cells that terminate in the spinal trigeminal nucleus. Involved in migraine headaches
