3 Threads in This Class Flashcards
What are the 3 threads in this class?
I - Practical Issues
II- Philosophical Foundations
III - Writing for Reflection
What is reflection?
Reflection - a process that unfolds over time in which we turn our attention to our actions and decisions and the thinking behind them. We do this so we can explore and perhaps challenge our underlying assumptions and come to appreciate that what we do has its roots in these assumptions.
Educational benefits for reflective writing?
Development of critical thinking skills, give meaning to the experiences you have, process thru how personal experience informs practice, improve your clinical judgement.
5 ways that Christians have interacted with the world?
In the world and not of it, christianity accommodates to the world, Christianity above culture: the sacred is something we Christians have that is in addition to the secular, Christ and culture in Paradox: we live both in a secular and sacred world at the same time, and it’s often a paradox in which compromise is not always the best answer- we embrace both sides, Christianity the transformer of Culture. (all of these can make sense depending on the situation)
“In the world and not of it”
Relates to the Amish culture. Richard Niebuhr says, Christianity against culture/the world: anti-culture. how do we live in this world? Only be a part of the world of the church, not change the world, preserve true string of Christianity until accommodates to the world.
Weakness of “in the world and not of it”
supremacy, shuts people out, isolationism, how relevant to each other and God,
“Christianity accommodates the world”
no tension btw the church and culture, everything is good, don’t worry about being different. if the world really saw Jesus who he was, they would accept him immediately.
Weakness of “Christianity accommodates the world”
focus on human culture means there is no difference.
“Christianity above culture: the sacred is something we Christians have that is in addition to the secular”
“catholic position,” not fully integrated- Christianity is the icing on the cakes (do regular day activities and then add Christianity and pray before meals).
weakness of “Christianity above culture: the sacred is something we Christians have that is in addition to the secular”
we really aren’t all that different, compromise can be the lazy way out, church is all extra-no difference
“Christ and culture in Paradox: we live both in a secular and sacred world at the same time, and it’s often a paradox in which compromise is not always the best answer- we embrace both sides”
world AND sacred, Friends AND Christ, put all together, living in both worlds, live in tension with both because we can mesh
Weakness of “Christ and culture in Paradox: we live both in a secular and sacred world at the same time, and it’s often a paradox in which compromise is not always the best answer- we embrace both sides”
doesn’t tell us how we are supposed to respond to situation, how can we embrace this tension? disbilities studies- why did God create disability?
“Christianity the transformer of Culture”
The world is not divided into secular and sacred, Great hope for this world. help God bring in the Kingdom to everyone…doing our part in transforming society (cleints, polititcs, etc).
Weakness of Christianity the transformer of Culture”
can have expectation you can change the world, disellusioned- working on this for so long and still nothing.
Andy Crouch, “Culture Making: Recovering our Creative Calling”
If there is something in culture you don’t live, then…1) condemn it 2) critique it 3) copying what’s good and leave out problems 4) cultivate culture- taking care of good things that we like 5) create something new to replace what we don’t like
