3 - Superposition Flashcards
What is the principle of superposition?
Principle of superposition = When multiple waves are present at the same point at the same time, the net displacement of the medium at that point is the sum of the displacements due to each individual wave.
What is a standing wave?
Standing wave = the superposition of two sinusoidal waves with identical amplitude and frequency travelling in opposite directions.
What happens when two sinusoidal waves overlap in a medium?
A standing wave can be created
At zero displacement will there be a node or antinode?
Node
At maximum displacement will there be a node or antinode?
Antinode
What is the maximum amplitude of a standing wave?
double that of the underlying waves.
What is the spacing between two adjacent nodes?
half the wavelength
What phase shift is inversion equivalent to?
half a cycle (π)
What happens to a standing wave at a fixed endpoint?
a wave is completely reflected and inverted with respect to the incident wave.
What does the integer m match in standing wave patterns?
number of antinodes
What does the second overtone mean?
m=3
What can two sinusoidal sound waves travelling in opposite directions form?
longitudinal standing wave
When is the equation: 2d=mλ/n used?
constructive - 0 or 2 phase shifts
destructive - 1 phase shift
When is the equation: 2d=(m-1/2)λ/n used?
constructive - 1 phase shift
destructive - 0 or 2 phase shifts
What type of interference is reflection?
constructive
