3. Successive Ionisation Energies Flashcards

1
Q

What are successive ionisation energies?

A

You can remove all the electrons from an atom, leaving only the nucleus.
Each time you remove an electron, there is a successive ionisation energy.
These are called the second ionisation energy, third ionisation energy etc….

Q

what is the second ionisation energy for example?

A

the energy needed to remove one electron from each ion in one mole of gaseous 1+ ions to form one mole of gaseous 2+ ions.

Q

know how to figure out which group the element is in from a graph of successive ionisation energies.

A

e.g. if one electron is removed before a big jump in ionisation energy it will be in group one.
