3 Shape Flashcards
form

volume
The mass or bulk of three-dimensional work; the amount of space it contains
mass
The actual bulk, as in structure, or implied bulk, as on a two-dimensional surface, of a three-dimensional work of art.
formalism
An approach to art criticism that focuses on the elements and design of works of art and deemphasizes the artist and the historic context.
rectilinear
Shapes with straight edges and angular corners formed by the intersection of straight lines.
curvilinear
Geometric shapes formed by the intersection of curving lines, or by lines circling back to join themselves and compose closed geometric figures.
geometric
veShapes found in geometry, such a s triangles and circles (rectilinear and curvilinear).
nonobjective
Art that makes no reference to visible reality.
abstract
Referring to works of art that have no reference to reality (“nonrepresentational” or “nonobjective” works) or to works of art whose subjects are abstracted from reality, often to reduce actual shapes to shapes perceived by the artist as more essential.
amorphous
Without shape; without boundaries
cubism
A twentieth-century style, developed by Picasso and Braque, that emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas and is characterized by multiple views of an object and the reduction of an image to its essential lines and shapes.
figure
A shape in two-dimensional art.
ground
The empty area surrounding a figure in two-dimensional art.
positive shape
The figure or shape in a composition
