3 Periodic Trends Flashcards
Periods and Groups
Periods are rows and elements in the same period have the same number of electrons in valence shell
Groups are columns and elements in the same columns have their valence shells at the same energy level (n). Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties.
Explain how the periodic table is ordered.
The elements are ordered in increasing atomic number (protons)
The period number shows the outer energy level that is occupied by electrons
The group number show the number of electrons in the outer shell.

Alkali metals
Group 1. The most reactive group of metals. React strongly with water.
Alkaline earth metals
Group 2. Reactive metals but less than Alkali metals.
Halogens
Group 17. The most reactive group of non-metals.
Noble Gases
Group 18. Very unreactive gases
Transition metals
D-block. Relatively stable metals with moderate reactivity. Useful for construction.
