3. Network Fundamentals Flashcards
Ports and Protocols
What are protocols
set of rules and the format of data and how to work with it when any two systems are communicating.
Defines the set of rules for any given device to be able to commuincate with any other device.
Two types -
TCP - Transmission Control Protocol
IP - Internal Protocol
Port and Protocols
What is a port
Associated with a particular service program, and allow any given computer to send and receive may different types of traffic.
Help to aid and understand with to do with the data once recieved.
Identifies exactly which service the client is requesting
TCP vs UDP Protocols
What are features with TCP
The delivery of every packet is guaranteed, meaning that any lost packets are retransmitted
Very reliable protocol
Example - HTTPS, HTTP
TCP vs UDP Protocols
What is UDP
User Datagram Protocol
TCP vs UDP
What are the features of UDP
Does not implement any type of connection
TCP vs UDP
What is the downside of UDP
- Not reliable
- Delivery of packets and their order is not guranteed
Switches and Routers
What are switches used for?
Simply used to connect devices together on a network.
Do not connect devices that are on a seperate network. Only use a LAN.
Switches and Routers
What are the different catergories of switches?
Managed and Unmanaged
Switches and Routers
Routers
Allows devices to access the internet.
Switches and Routers
What is a extender?
Creates a new wireless network
Patch Panels
What is a patch panel?
Collection of ports on a panel. Acts as central location where all the wires from all locations can come together in a sinlge location.
Firewalls
What is the purpose of a firewall?
Enhance the security of an environment by controlling inbound and/or outbound network or host traffic.
Use rules to allow or deny traffic an implemented as either a dedicated hardware device or as software device.
