- Promoted to Commander of Artillery
- Toulon, 1793, British seized naval base but Napoleon recaptured city, showing personal courage (bayonet wound in the leg) and effective use of artillery
- Promoted to Brigadier General (24yo) in December 1793
- NB: ‘It was in Toullon that my reputation began’
