3. Motion Flashcards
What is instantaneous speed?
The speed over a very short interval of time
Define acceleration and include equation
The rate of change of velocity
a = ∆v / ∆t
Define stopping distance
The total distance travelled from when the driver first sees a reason to stop, to when the vehicle stops
Define thinking distance
The distance travelled between the moment when you first sees a reason to stop, to the moment when you use the brake
Define braking distance
The distance travelled from the time the brake is applied until the vehicle stops
How do you calculate stopping distance?
Thinking distance + Braking distance
How do you calculate thinking distance?
speed x reaction time
What factors affect the braking distance?
- speed of the vehicle
- condition of the brakes
- condition of the tires
- condition of the road
- weather conditions
What can affect thinking distance?
alertness of drive (alcohol etc)
What is free fall?
The motion of an object accelerating under gravity with no other forces acting on it
