Mental Health (WHO)
Mental health: a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to contribute to their community

Mental health: the state of your PSYCHOLOGICAL and
emotional well-being.
- It is a necessary resource for
living a healthy life and a main factor in overall health
- It does not mean the same thing as mental
illness, but poor mental health can lead to mental and physical illness

What is Addiction (American Society of Addiction Medicine)
- Addiction: a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among the brain, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences.
- People with addiction use
substances or engage in behaviours that become compulsive and continue despite harmful consequences
What is Addiction (National Institute on Drug Abuse)
- An addiction is an illness (just as heart disease and cancer are illnesses)
- An addiction is not a
weakness. It does not mean someone is a bad person. - People from all backgrounds can get an addiction. (It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, where you live, if you went to college or not)
- An addiction can happen to anyone and at any (chances are higher when a person starts using drugs when they’re young)
2 Types of Pathological Internet Use
1) Generalized pathological Use
- Involves a general, multidimensional overuse of the Internet
2) Specific pathological Internet use
- Involves dependence on a specific function of the
Internet (e.g., pornography, shopping, gambling, etc.)
What is Problematic Media Use?
- Excessive concern about social media
- Being driven by a strong motivation to use social media
- Devoting so much time and effort to social media use that it impairs social activities, studies/job, relationships, and/or psychological health and well-being
What are Social Networking Sites?
- virtual communities where users can create individual public profiles, interact with real-life friends, and meet other people based on shared interests

- Depression (major depressive disorder) is a treatable,
but common medical illness that negatively affects
how you feel, the way you think and how you act. - Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of
interest in activities you once enjoyed. - It can lead to a
variety of emotional and physical problems and can
decrease your ability to function at work and at home

Depression is:

- a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease
- More women are affected than men

- used to describe “fitness inspiration”

- Communicate with like-minded individuals
- Exercise tips, recipes, and photographs of food or people, self-portraits

- Known by the hashtag #thinspo
- Deliberately promotes weight loss and thinness
- Glorifies aspects of disordered eating behavior
Cyberbullying (Government of Canada)
Cyberbullying is when a child/ teen becomes a target of
actions by others – using
devices – that are intended to embarrass, humiliate, torment,
threaten or harass

sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about
someone else. It can include sharing personal or private

The Silver Lining of Media
1) Social Connection
- Reduced loneliness: Connecting with friends and family can combat feelings
of isolation
- Building communities: Finding groups with shared interests can provide a
sense of belonging and support
2) Increased Self-Expression
- Creative outlets: Platforms (Instagram and TikTok) allow for artistic expression and sharing of passions
- Voice and advocacy: Sharing experiences and raising awareness about mental
health issues can be empowering
3) Access to Information and Support
- Mental health resources: Finding support groups, therapists, and information
about mental health conditions
- Inspiration and motivation: Discovering stories of resilience and finding
inspiration from others
