3. maintaining metabolism Flashcards
what is the metabolic rate
the quantity of energy used by an organism per unit time*
*all reactions need an activation energy
what can be measured to compare metabolic rates
oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide and heat production
what can be used to measure metabolic rates
espirometers, oxygen probes, carbon dioxide probes and calorimeters
why do organisms with high metabolic rates require more efficient delivery of oxygen to cells?
because the more energy required by the organism, the more oxygen must be transported to respiring cells
describe the circulatory system in fish
single circulatory system - blood only goes through the heart once - one atrium and one ventricle
describe the circulatory system in mammals and birds
double circulatory system - blood goes through the heart twice - two atria and two ventricles
why are mammals and birds circulatory systems described as complete
mammals and birds have two atria and two ventricles so that deoxygenated and oxygenated blood never mix which means that the circulatory will work more efficiently
why are reptiles and amphibians circulatory systems described as incomplete
reptiles and amphibians have two atria but only one ventricle so oxygenated and deoxygenated blood do mix together which makes this system less efficient
describe the circulatory systems in amphibians and reptiles
double circulatory system - blood goes through the heart twice - two atria and one ventricle
why is a double circulatory system is more efficient at delivering oxygen than a single circulatory system
In a double circulatory system (blood flows through the heart twice for each circulation of the body) oxygenated blood can be pumped out at a higher pressure. This enables more efficient oxygen delivery to cells
