Group Decision Making
OR
MDM
- Also called as Multi participant decision making(MDM)
- Although a large proportion of daily decisions are faced and made by the manager by an individual but many of the decisions in today’s work place are made by the groups of individuals
- An activity conducted by grp with its individual mem
- the structure is primarily based on interaction and flow of communication among its members
Holsapple suggessts to use term multiple descision makers - group MDM structure where multiple decision makers completely interact
- team MDM structure by members advise 1 decision maker but do not interact
-
committee Single decision maker and member interaction

prblms with grps
- In general members satisfaction cohesiveness decreases with the group size
- Participant interaction decreases with inc in size
- Effective or emotional relationships tend to decrease as size increase
- Central dominant leadership tends to increase as size increase
- Conflict is resolved with political rather than analytic solution as size inc
- Groupthink: in large groups, people tend to think in ways that achieve unanimity instead of creativity.
- gender issues (tends to plays different values on different skills)
- When more than 1person is in the role of decision maker, Probability of negotiation increases as the decision may involve multiple viewpoints thus creating need for negotiations
Ways to solve conflicts:
1) The desire to be seen as good team member can lead to conflict avoidance
2) allowing team members to participate anonymously can also control conflict
MDM support tech
1) Process support mechanism focuses on facilitating interaction and help to govern the communication activities
2) these can select organisers derive information
3) It provides access to techniques that philtre combine and analyse technology relevant to the task
-
organizational DDD
A system that provides decision support Across the organisation -
Group support system
Technology that is used to aid multiple participant efforts -
Group DSS
Special system designed for M D M -
DSS
A system under the control of decision maker that provides set of tools to help structure the decision making situation and to improve effectiveness of decision outcome. -
Groupware
- Software designed to support collaboration including capturing and storing the information exchange
benefits:
1) Increased cost control
2) Increased productivity in
3) improved customer service
4)Support for total quality management activities(TQM)
5)Reduce number of meetings
6)increased automation of routine workflow
GDSS
Group decision support system
- An interactive computer based system that facilitates solution of unstructured problems by set of decision makers working together as groups
- It aids groups especially groups of managers in analysing problem situations and in performing rogue decision making tasks
Similarities between GDSS and DSS:
1) Boot use models data and user friendly softwares
2) both use internal and external data
3) Both allow decision maker to take an active role
4) Both have flexible systems
5) Both have graphical output
adv: -
Anonymity
Drive out of fear leading to better decisions from many decision makers -
Parallel communication
Eliminates monopolising that is involvement of single person - Portability
- Ability for virtual meetings
- Automated record keeping
- Ease of use
- suppresses negative group behaviour and increases positive growth behaviour
- High level managers spend 80% of time in decision making in groups so GDSS can reduce time
- provides hardware software’s database, procedures for effective decision making
Distributed Group DSS
DGDSS
- Designed to facilitate decision making amongst dispersed groups
There are two types of GDSS :
1) synchronous DGSS
2) Asynchronous DGSS
The development and delivery platforms of DSS/GDSS are now shifting to the Web environment. A Web-based GDSS refers to a computerized system that provides decision tools and decision support information to its users who are accessing it via a Web browser (e.g. Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer).
EIS
Executive Information Systems
- It is a Special type of DSS Software designed for top management for accessing info about companies performance, Overall operations and summary of what competitors are doing
- These systems are generally easy to operate and present information in ways easy to quickly absorb like graphs charts etc
- It is a tool which has died at to on line access to relevant information
- It is timely and accurate
- Easy to access
components of EIS
Hardware Components
* An EIS requires no specific or unique hardware or peripherals other than those typically found in a modern client/server environment.
* The important considerations regarding sufficient RAM memory, hard drive space, removable storage, high speed graphics, large display terminals and data access, and multimedia capabilities relevant to any client-side setup are equally relevant in an EIS environment.
Software Components
* In contrast to hardware, software is usually highly specialized to the problem domain.
* This specialization is often achieved by using off-the-shelf components for the EIS backbone, and customized modules to meet specific needs.
Current EIS Technologies
Dobrzeniecki proposed a three-tiered functional categorization:
Category 1: EIS products that include a full set of applications developed by the same vendor
Category 2: EIS products that are implemented on top of DSS products previously developed by the same vendor
Category 3: Applications that serve to bind together any number of products currently by the client organisation into a cohesive, integrated EIS.
