Individuals in research are capable of making decisions about participation
Informed Consent
The principle that all participants in an experiment be informed in advance of all aspects of the research that might influence their decision to participate
Deception
Active misrepresentation of information
Debriefing
Explanation of the purpose of the research that is given to participants following their participation in the research
Role-Playing
Experimenter describes a situation to participants and asks them how they would respond to the situation
Simulation
Used to examine conflict between competing individuals, driving behavior using driving simulators, or jury deliberations
Honest Experiments
Situations in which behavior could be studied without elaborate deception
Justice
Everyone has equal access, fairness in receiving the benefits of research as well as bearing the burdens of accepting risks
Institutional Review Board
An ethics review committee established to review research proposals scientists, non scientists, and legal experts
Exempt Research
Exempt from review because there is no risk
Anonymous questionnaires, surveys, educational tests
Minimal Risk
The risks of harm to participants are no greater than risks encountered in daily life or in routine physical or psychological tests
