Who were the Lollards
Followers of John Wycliffe
What did John Wycliffe do
Undertook the translation of the Bible into English
What group of society made up the Lollards and why
- The majority were craftsmen + merchants
- As exposed to new religious ideas being discussed on the continent through trade with Netherlands
What were the key Lollard beliefs and what is the significance of all of these
- Individuals should have Bibles in English, and people be able to pray to God directly, rather than through the Church
- Predestination
- Opposed transubstantiation
- HIGHLY RADICAL IDEAS
Why is it difficult to estimate how widespread Lollardy was
Lollards were told to continue attending Church to place themselves above suspision
Why and when did support for Lollardy diminish
- Once established heretic
- Support melted away
- Especially in the gentry + nobility

- Soul benefitted from good faith alone, rather than good works as well

- English scholars like William Tyndale, who translated bible into English
- And Simon Fish
- Few in England attracted
- Certainly none of the nobility

At the end of 1520, there was a public book burning of Lutheran Books in Cambridge
What was Humanism based off
The re-visiting of published Greek and Latin texts
To what extent did Humanists challenge the Catholic Church
- Belived in the basic Catholic notions
- Did not challange Church’s doctrine and liturgy
- Just wanted to reform Church from within
- And purify corrupt practises
Who were the famous Humanists
Erasmus, Colet and Thomas More
What monarchal figures were Humanists, and what Humanistic things did they support
- Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII
- Re-writing of the bible in Latin, but based off original Greek texts
