3. covalent bonding Flashcards
molecules are
groups of atoms bonded together
molecules are held together by
covalent bonds
definition
covalent bond
a covalent bond is a strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms
most of the time the central atom ends up with
8 electrons in its outer shell
sometimes central atom can have
less than 8 electrons in their outer shell
e.g. boron trifluoride boron only has 6 electrons in its outer shell
few compounds can use d orbitals to expand the octet which means
e.g. sulfur hexafluoride
they have more than 8 electrons in their outershell
e.g. SF6 S has 12 electrons in its outer shell
e.g. of molecule that has 2 shared pair of electrons (double bond)
e.g. O2
e.g. of a molecule that has 3 shared pair of electrons (triple bond)
e.g. N2
dative covalent bond is where
both electrons come from one atom
covalent bonding happens between
2 non metals
