Define neoplasm
(new growth)
abnormal mass of tissue, the growth of which is virtually autonomous and exceeds that of normal tissue. The growth in uncoordinated and persist after the cessation of the stimuli that initiated the change.
What is the parenchyma?
cancer cells that have been transformed
What are the 4 factors that help to distinguish between malignant and benign tumours?
- differences in differentiation

- metastasis
What s anaplasia?
poor cellular differentiation
What are the characteristics of a well-differentiated tumour?
can recognise which tissue it came from
What are differences between malignant and benign tumours in terms of local invasion?
Benign tumours dont infiltrate the basal lamina, malignant tumours do
Give an example of an oncogenic virus and the cancer that it can cause?
Epstein-Barr virus - Burkitt’s lymphoma
HPV - cervical cancer
Hep B virus - Hepatocellular carcinoma
