3-Anatomy and ultrastucture of the gingiva Flashcards
Define the gingiva
The gingiva is that part of the oral mucosa that covers the
alveolar processes of the jaws and surrounds the necks of the
teeth
what are the Anatomical parts of the gingiva
1.Marginal gingiva &
Gingival sulcus
2.Attached gingiva
3.Interdental gingiva
How to identify the Mucogingival junction?
1-Visual method (VM),
2- Functional method (FM)/Roll test
3-VM after histochemical staining method
(Histochemical method using Iodine).
4-Tension test. (Applied to lip in outward,
downward/upward and lateral direction.
Then gingival margin is observed)
why is it important to locate the mucogingival junction?
because it is the ideal location for mini screw
histologic depth vs clinical depth of the sulcus
histologic depth = 1.m mm
clinical depth = 2-3mm
regarding the Microscopic features of gingiva:-
what is the epithelium?
Main form of tissue in the gingiva is the stratified squamous
epithelium.
cell types of gingiva?
-Major Cell Type
Keratinocyte
-Other Cell Types(non keratinocyte)
Langerhans cells
Melanocytes,
Merkel cells
