#3 Flashcards
Folliculogenesis
Development of follicles
Primordial Follicles
Primary oocyte surrounded by single layer of squamous follicular cells
Primary follicles
Larger oocytes and follicular cells that still form a single layer
Secondary follicles
Still larger oocytes and follicular cells now stratified
Tertiary follicles
Granulosa cells begin secreting follicular fluid in cavity
Mature follicles
Normanlly only one becomes a mature follicle destined to ovulate
What componet of the follicle secretes increasing amounts of estrogen
Follicular Phase
How many follicles turn into mature follicles
One
What are the hypothalamic and pituitary hormones that regulate the ovaries? What do the ovaries regulate
Hormones of the hypothalamus-pituitary hormones regulate the ovaries-secrete hormones that regulate the uterus
explain what happens during the follicular phase of the sexual cycle
Follicular phase:menstruation until ovulation
-Day 1-14 of an average cycle
Preovulatory phase: end of menstruation until ovulation
When does ovulation occur?
Ovulation-rupture of the follicle and realease egg typically around day 14
Ovulation takes 2 to 3 minutes
How does estrogen change in the uterus
It causes the uterus and external genitalia to enlarge, the mammary glands to grow, and the breast to increase to nearly twice their former size
Where does estrogen come from
The corpus luteum for the first 12 weeks, after that comes mainly from the placenta
How does progesterone change the uterus
Progesterone causes the uterine lining or endometruim to thicken. This helps prepare a supportive environment in your uterus for a fertilized egg
Where did the progesterone come from
The placenta
What does LH do to a developing follicle
Lh stimulates the corpus luteum to continue to grow and secrete rising levels of estradiol and progesterone
How does the fimbriae catch the oocyte
Finger like projections onto the surface of the ovary help catch the egg
What happens if the fimbriae dosent catch
Oocyte fall into the pelvic cavity and die
What goes LH do to the corpus luteum
LH stimulates the corpus luteum to continue to grow and secrete rising levels of estradiol and progesterone
What happens to the corpus luteum if pregnancy dosent occur
Endometrim breaks down in the last 2 days menstruation begins and the cycle starts over
Prolifeative Phase
layer of endometrial tissue lost in last menstruation is rebuilt
Secretory Phase
Endometrium thickens still more in response to progesterone from corpus luteum
Premenstrual Phase
period of endometrial degeneration
Menstrual Phase
Discharge of menstrual fluid from the vagina
