3 +4 Backing Storage and types of storage Flashcards
Magnetic
Information stored in a linear fashion, on a device that has been magnetised. 1=magnatised 2=non magnetic
Optical
Information stored in a spiral. When information is put on disk pit=1 no pit=0. When being read a lazar is used to read it. More can be stored on optical than magnetic.
Solid state
Uses flash memory, millions of transistors/switches . Solid state drive is shock proof.
Hard disk
Magnetic, internal
Non volatile storage device containing magnetic disks that spin fast.
CD compact disk
Optical, external
Up to 700mb of data stored as notches and read by a laser.
DVD digital versatile disk
Optical, external
4.7 gb usually used to store multimedia
SSD solid state drive
Solid state, external
Non volatile, millions of electronic switches that are either on or off.
USB Universal Serial Bus
Solid state, external and remote
Due to no moving parts they are extremely robust
Floppy disk
Magnetic, external
Thin magnetic disk in a plastic case. Was capable of storing 1.44mb
Magnetic tape
Magnetic, external
Data is stored sequentially on a flexible tape which is created from electromagnetic material.
Cloud
Magnetic, internal
Data is stored on a remote server and accessed via internet
